New Aluminum Smooth-side Design Launched
At Mid America Truck Show
Delhi, ON - The originator of the smooth-side custom aluminum trailer body has introduced a new rear-dump body design to offer lower operating costs and improved trailer durability to the aggregate and grain hauling industries.
Titan Trailers, the creator of the original THINWALL™ extruded hollow-core aluminum panel, unveiled its latest innovation at the 2003 Mid America Truck Show in Louisville KY.
The THINWALL design first attracted attention in the trash hauling industry, where the unique smooth-side panels have been shown to achieve significant fuel savings, reduced maintenance costs and longer service life for custom transfer trailers. Now available for custom semi-dump haulers, Titan’s distinctive horizontal aluminum panel structure provides lighter weight and improved aerodynamic performance compared to conventional post & panel trailers, and also allows stronger 100% machine-welded sidewalls than other smooth-side trailers. The hollow-core design, first engineered by Titan President Mike Koepfler, means that any damage that heavy and abrasive loads cause to the sidewalls of the trailer is confined to the interior cargo space – the exterior remains smooth, efficient and “new” in appearance.
The THINWALL panel also offers grain and aggregate haulers the advantage of increased cargo capacity with a full 100” interior width from end-to-end, with smooth inside walls for clean, quick unloading. With no posts for loads to hang up on, the Titan trailers require less clean-up and maintenance and more resistance to corrosion.
According to Mike Kloepfer, President and Principal Designer, "We spent a lot of time listening to owners and developed the trailer and the corresponding features that we are presenting to the marketplace today. Customers wanted a trailer that could withstand the pounding this industry gives out and at the same time, a trailer that drivers would be proud to pull behind their rig for the life of the trailer. Customers also wanted to haul more in each load and save money on each trip.”
Titan customers in the trash industry report fuel savings of 10% to 15% as a result of the THINWALL’s lighter weight and smooth exterior.
The new Titan rear-dump trailer shown in Louisville featured a curved nose-end for improved wind deflection. The trailer coupler is also 100% aluminum, achieving further weight-savings for maximum payloads and fuel economy.
The dump’s lift cylinder is housed internally to protect the cylinder from outside elements. The lightweight aluminum frame is made of a one-piece extruded beam with heavy top and bottom flanges plus full-height cross members with radius gussets and stainless steel corrosion-resistant plates between the suspension and frame. The aluminum box has a direct floor to wall connection for continuous strength and smoother load shedding.
